Freie Universit?t Berlin

Within the framework of the University Alliance for Sustainability, Freie Universit?t Berlin together with its four strategic partner universities: the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), the Peking University (China), St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and the University of British Columbia (Canada) will focus on sustainability as a comprehensive topic for collaborating in research, teaching, and campus management.

The Alliance is under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Dr. Klaus T?pfer, former Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, who was previously the Minister of Environmental Protection and the Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) Potsdam. The UAS receives funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The partner universities have worked collaboratively to reach the goals of University Alliance for Sustainability since 2015:

• develop joint research and teaching projects,
• offer exchange options for faculty, staff, and students,
• foster inter-institutional learning with regards to management issues.

	?We live in a very complex world, we have an increase of population going up to 9 billion in the middle of this century, we have huge differentiations in welfare, in development states, huge, huge gaps between the rich and the poor and we see the consequences out of this. So in universities we need research, we really need a focused and oriented research to find solutions for a peaceful world in the future overcoming poverty without burdening the environment any more, that is what sustainable development in universities means.¡° Prof. Dr. Klaus T?pfer, former Director of the United Nations Environment Programme
