- Master?s programs


For admission to the Master's program, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Have a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor) of at least 180 credit points (ECTS). As part of this degree, you must have earned at least 30 ECTS in courses in East Asian Studies and/or Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies (language courses not included).
  • The master's program in Global East Asia is an English-language master's program. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at the C1 level (CEFR).

  • Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in one of the following languages (at least level B1 CEFR or equivalent): Chinese, Japanese, Korean.

Students do not pay any tuition fees, the university only charges semester fees and contributions each semester.

The program provides students with core knowledge and diverse methodologies for exploring topics of 'global East Asia' in its historical and contemporary development. With its multidimensional as well as interdisciplinary approach, the Master's program deals with local, national, regional and global contexts in and around East Asia. Particular attention is paid to both the structural features that constitute East Asia as a unified space and to political, economic, and cultural barriers that have impeded further integration.

The MAGEA program covers three main parts consisting of several modules, each module consists of one or two seminars. The “Integrative Area Global East Asia” is compulsory for all MAGEA students. In the consolidation area, three modules must be completed. Students have to select modules from at least two of the three regional specializations Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies. The program concludes with a master thesis. For the three modules in the complimentary area, students are advised to deepen their language skills in Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Students may also choose modules from other master’s programs offered at Freie Universit?t Berlin, such as Political Science, Sociology or Global History. Graduates possess in-depth scientific knowledge and advanced professional skills.

The Master's Program Global East Asia provides skills and knowledge that prepare students for responsible positions in academic activities in university and non-university research and teaching, media, museum, documentation and cultural institutions as well as in secondary schools and institutions of further education, but also for activities in international companies and institutions whose activities are based in the East Asian cultural region or are closely related to it.
